Obanikoro, Maku, Wike, 4 Others Resign As Ministers
Seven ministers in President Goodluck Jonathan’s cabinet have resigned their positions.
Those who resigned are Ministers of Information, Labaran Maku; Trade and Industry, Samuel Ortom; State for Education, Nyesom Wike; and State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro. Others are Ministers of Labour, Emeka Wogu; Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu; State for Niger Delta, Dairus Ishaku.
The ministers quit their posts to pursue their political ambitions, the government said.
The ministers, whose departure had long been expected, will contest gubernatorial elections in their respective states.
Maku intends to replace Governor Tanko Al-Makura of Nassarawa State and, therefore, win the state currently being ruled by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the PDP while Wogu is said to be nursing the ambition of succeeding Governor Theodore Orji of Abia State.
Wike is interested in taking over Rivers State from Governor Rotimi Amaechi; Ortom has his eyes on the seat to be vacated by Governor Gabriel Suswam of Benue State while Obanikoro also plans to take over Lagos State from Governor Babatunde Fashola and the APC.
Maku had confirmed his own departure from the cabinet last weekend when he attended a thanksgiving church service in his state capital, Lafia, during which he also gave October 20 as the day he will resign his appointment.
The Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, thanked the seven ministers on behalf of the FEC and wish them the best in their future endeavours while Maku responded on behalf of the ministers who are exiting the cabinet.
