Funke Akindele really disappointed me by featuring in the very senseless ‘Oga On Top” movie

So Our movie of the week is Oga On Top which features Funke Akindele and Nkem Owoh…You can watch the movie trailer (HERE).
Honestly, the ‘Oga On Top’ movie is not worth a minute of your precious time.
I enjoyed Jenifa, the return of Jenifa and the White Hunters, but come on, her “comic roles” in movies is starting to suck. Funke Akindele should know by now that her tactic of speaking bad grammar all in a bid to make viewers laugh is no longer effective, at least for me.
And to think that I actually sat down to watch the very annoying movie because she featured in it.
Earlier this year, we had the viral “Oga On top” debacle which started after a certain NSCDC boss couldn’t tell the NSCDC website address on national TV so one would have expected that the “Oga On Top” movie will be related to issue but hey no, it wasn’t!
You can obviously tell that the movie had no script nor screenplay, it was just free style because a scripted movie wouldn’t be that wishy washy.
I’m sorry if I sound so angry in this review but I’m just so pissed off!
Oga On Top was directed by Amayo Uzo Phillips.
SYNOPSIS: A man of marriageable age (Nkem Owoh) is under immense pressure from his family to get married. He finally uses the internet as a way to fulfil his family’s wishes and meets Bimbo (Funke Akindele). She is an illiterate, but fakes an excellent educated woman on her Face book profile. They get to meet and fall in love, only for Bimbo to start killing all Osuofia’s family members. Do you remember the 2007 movie era when nollywood movies ended with ‘all the characters dying’ or a ‘it was all a dream’ ending? Those days I could predict it because the writer would have usually written himself into a corner and there’d be nowhere else to go.
Well, this movie ends with both. Everyone dies and it’s all a dream.
The viewer is teased with a mystery that didn’t pan out. Did they tell us why Bimbo was killing the whole family? No, they all died and it was a dream and she no longer had trouble speaking English. Hiss.
At the end, after watching the whole movie, wasting almost two hours of my life, I was incensed.
Let’s talk about the effects, they were not good. Not at all, and I’m judging harshly because first, they didn’t need some of the effects that they used, and second I know Nigeria has really evolved in the art of sound effects. The soundtrack was forgettable and the costumes just as forgettable.
In conclusion, this film hearkens back to the 2006-7 period and repeats all of its mistakes.
In fact the only thing that differentiates it is the picture quality. Watch if you are comfortable with the ending and are looking to watch a new movie that isn’t royalty based.
Once again, the title of this has no bearing on the ‘Oga at the top’ scandal; it has no sane reason to be called this…none at all.
You can watch the movie on Iroko TV (HERE), who knows, you might enjoy it better than I did and laugh till your ribs ache.
