How I escaped death in Kenya mall attack" – Wole Soyinka

But for providence, Nigeria's Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, would have been among the dead in the terror attack that took place at the Nairobi Westgate mall in Kenya last weekend. Speaking at a press conference at the Freedom Park in Victoria Island, Lagos, on Friday in honour of the late Ghanaian poet, Professor Kofi Awoonor who died in the attack, Soyinka led a group of Nigerian writers to condemn the Nairobi massacre. “Those who organised and carried out the outrage on innocent lives in Nairobi are carriers of the most lethal virus of corruption imaginable – corruption of the soul, corruption of the spirit, corruption of that animating humanistic essence that separates us from predatory beasts."
Soyinka said he and Prof Awoonor would have attended the Storymoja/Hay Literature Festival, but couldn’t be there with him due to other pressing engagements he had elsewhere. “My absence was particularly regrettable, because I had planned to make up for my failure to turn up for the immediate prior edition. Participant or absentee however, this is one edition we shall not soon forget,” he said. The literary iconic said, giving his close relationship with Awoonor, he might have been at the same place with him and could have been shot as well. He said: “Kofi and I could have been splitting a bottle at that same watering hole in between events and at the end of each day.” Condemning the use of religion to commit atrocities, Soyinka, who spoke on the theme, “Humanity and Against,” said: "I am no theologian of any religion, but I aver that these assailants delude themselves with vistas of paradise after life, that their delusion is born of the perverted reading of salvation and redemption.”

Jealous ex-girlfriend sets rival ablaze in Enugu

According to a report by Sunnewsonline.com, a 20 year old girl allegedly set ablaze the 22 year old new love interest of her ex-boyfriend. Cynthia Onah reportedly went to her ex-boyfriend's house at Onugba Nike area in Enugu State late at night with a gallon of fuel and emptied its content on Chinwe Igwe, her ex's girlfriend, who was sleeping. The incident took place on August 24th.
The Commissioner of Police Enugu State, Mr. Mohammed Adamu described the incident as very unfortunate. “It is terrible that a girl because of jealousy would set another girl on fire simply because they are befriending the same boy.”
CP Adamu explained that on that fateful day, Cynthia had in connivance with another suspect, one Obiora Chukwuegbo stormed Chika’s home and set Chinwe on fire. It was only the assistance of  neighbours that Chinwe was rescued through the window as the fire consumed the room. She was said to have been taken to a private hospital before she was transferred to Annunciation Specialist Hospital  Emene, Enugu State where she is still receiving treatment.

The boyfriend, Chika told Sunday Sun
“I am a driver and I’ve been dating Chinwe for the past five years. We had little quarrel and we stopped dating. I meet Cynthia who is a prostitute and dated her for just one month. We separated one month after because at times she would be chasing me with a knife. I couldn’t bear it and so I went back to settle with my former girlfriend. Cynthia didn’t give up as she threatened that she was going to deal with us. She even threatened to pour acid on me.
Being a driver, I travelled the day Cynthia burnt my girlfriend. It was one of my neighbours that called me to say that my house was on fire and that somebody poured fuel under the door and it exploded and burnt my girlfriend who was sleeping in the room; that they have rescued her through the window.
“When I got home, I saw that all my property had been burnt to ashes. My girlfriend was hospitalized because she sustained injuries from the fire. But I am determined and I have promised God that with the condition of my  girlfriend that I am still going to marry her.”
The suspect, Cynthia, who hails from Isi-Uzo Local Government Area of  Enugu State, said
“I started dating Chika when he had misunderstanding with his former girlfriend, Chinwe. We dated for one month and then he told me that he was no longer interested in marrying me. Chika is owing me N12,000. When we had a quarrel, I did not threaten him with a knife. I only used the knife to deflate his tyres.
“I have quarreled with Chinwe several times. I sent her a text message to leave my boyfriend. Because she threatened  me, I also threatened her that she will never enjoy the relationship. I don’t  know anything about who took fuel to the house of her boyfriend and burnt  the house. On that fateful day, Chika called my phone at night and said that I should meet him at Emene junction. I was out waiting for him when the policemen from the State CID arrested me. I didn’t know anything about the incident. I only know we have traded words.”
When  Sunday Sun visited the victim at the Annunciation Specialist Hospital Emene Area, Enugu State, she said:
“I am still shocked at what happened. I regret dating Chika as I have been turned to something else now. I saw  Cynthia Onah and  Chukwuegbo Obiora after they had poured  fuel under the door and fire was everywhere. I was calling him for help. It was when I was calling  for help through the other window that  I saw Cynthia Onah and Obiora Chkwuegbo running away and I was shouting for help until the neighbours broke one of the windows and carried me out from the window”,  she said.
“My relationship with Chika is over. I am in pains and agony. I didn’t know what to do. I was sleeping and suddenly I saw smoke and it exploded and caught fire. I could have been burnt to ashes if not for the neighbours who broke through the window and rescued me,” she added.
CP Adamu said the suspects would soon be charged to court.

List : Nollywood Stars Turned Pastors

eucharia-anunobi-1
Although, many have criticised their decisions to embrace Christ, blaming such decisions principally on the turn of events in their lives, it is not out of place today to come across celebrities who have become preachers of the Word.
From Eucheria Anunobi to Zack Orji, Ndidi Obi, Pat Attah, Ernest Azuzu and many others, it has been a steady influx of fire-brand celebrity Pastors into the Vineyard of God. But the question on the lips of everyone is whether these celebrities have found true happiness after all, and if they do, how much has the pulpit paid off, in place of dumping their flourishing careers in acting for the work of God. Like the Biblical saying, “When we come to the Word of God and we pray over His Word, when His Word shines on us, we are exposed and emptied of any other thing.”
Zack Orji
Zackorjipastor
Ex-President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria,AGN, Zack Orji can be described as “a gentleman without blemish.” This, no doubt informed his decision to become a worker in the Vineyard of God. Zack Orji ordained a full-time evangelist by Bishop Emma Isong of Christian Central Chapel International (CCCI).
He is said to have dedicated his time to preaching the gospel of good tidings across the nations of the world. The veteran actor has been spotted in such cities as Abuja, Nasarawa and Makurdi where he is engaged in various evangelical activities. But this, however, has not stopped him from storming the celebrity hangout, in Surulere to fraternize with his friends and colleagues in the movie industry.
Eucharia Anunobi
eucharia-anunobi-1
In fact, Eucheria Anunobi’s conversion was the most talked about conversion to Christ in recent times. The actress who ruled the screen in the early 90s with her role in the film “Glamour Girls” has been trailed with many controversies and scandals, most of which bothered on her relationships and crashed marriage. But after many years of being in the news for the wrong reasons, Eucheria shocked her fans when she announced she had given her life to Christ. Few months after the announcement, UK was ordained at the Fresh Oil Ministry, Egbeda, Lagos, as an evangelist.
Interestingly, with her ordination which was performed by Pastor Psalm Okpe, Eucharia willed the power to preach as a pastor and she’s doing so, without looking back. Those in the know said, she already counsels youths in the church and travels at random to spread the gospel of salvation.
This, however, has not taken away some of the traits that made her fans term her “a bad girl” before her transformation. She is still flashy and daring. Just weeks after the ordination, Eucheria bought a brand new BMW X5. Severally, she has refuted reports that she has abandoned her acting career for the work of God. Instead, she pointed out that she would be choosier in accepting roles in movies.
Pat Attah
pat-attah
Pat Attah? That play boy actor who broke the hearts of many ‘Nollywood babes’ during his time, and left as soon as the ovation was loud. The once-upon-a-dreadlock-turned clean cut actor, is currently based in Hamburg, Germany where he’s winning souls for Christ. Those in the know said, he does not preach in churches, rather he is now very much a born-again.
Many knew him before he left the shores of the country as one who was close to the ladies and in love with the bottle. Today, reading his posts online, one would acknowledge the fact that Pat is a new creature in Christ. He often uses social network sites including Facebook to deliver his sermon and messages to those who care to read them. But what we don’t know is how he has been faring over there.
Liz Benson
benson_liz3
Elizabeth Benson, popularly known as Liz Benson used to be the toast of many lovers of Nigerian films and TV series. Her journey into stardom began when she appeared on the set of the popular television soap opera, Fortunes, in 1993. Liz Benson played the part of Mrs. Agnes Johnson in the soap, which ran for about two years on the NTA. After that, she acted in various TV series and many movies.
In 1994, her role in Glamour Girls, a very successful home video that focused on prostitution, literally changed her fortunes. The movie shot her into prominence and soon, she became a subject of many scandals and controversies, forcing her to disappear from teh scene, in order to rebrand herself. But as luck would have it, she got married to her Bishop Great Emeya husband in 2009, at the Rainbow Christian Assembly in Warri, Delta State. She has since been ordained an evangelist in the church. Presently, she runs the church with her husband.
Charles Okafor
7230-charles
Charles Okafor who staged a comeback to Nollywood recently in Uche Jombo’s film, “Misplaced” after disappearing from the radar is also one of the actors that are winning souls for Christ. He used to act alongside Saint Obi, Zack Orji and Richard Mofe Damijo and has made a name for himself before disappearing from the scene.
The UNIPORT trained actor who starred in such films as Forest of Promises, Ocean Deep, Across the River, Between Love, Boiling Point, and Executive Connection, worked briefly with the Security and Exchange Commission, before resigning to go into full time acting. Recently, he was spotted at a filling station around Isolo area of Lagos, and from the way, he looked, the handsome actor has surely given up the things of this world.
Okey Ogunjiofor
okey
Okechukwu Ogunjiofor is known to be the founder of Nollywood. He produced the film, Living in Bondage which gave birth to Nollywood. With the explosion of this movie in 1992, Nollywood prides itself today as second to the largest movie industry in the world after 20 years of its existence. But this man who started this innovation engage himself more in other aspects of movie production. He hardly features in movies but appears on special arrangement. He has since reconciled himself with his maker. Today, he is not only a preacher of teh Word, he is also House of God. He is also a motivational speaker and unknown to many, Paullo as he’s fondly called by his fans is an author of many Christian literature.

VIDEO: Mikel on Cloud Nine!

22 September, 2013

John Mikel Obi is delighted at scoring his first Premier League goal for Chelsea in their 2-0 win over Fulham on Saturday.
The 26-year-old preferred to take a collective approach by emphasizing on the team’s ability to get back to winning ways after a poor run of defeats in their last three games.
“We had lost two games in a row and the most important thing to do today was to win, we got the three points and my goal was just a bonus,” Mikel said.
Mikel however admitted his delight at scoring his first league goal after 185 games, disclosing that his teammates had already started teasing him about it.
“I am pretty happy, it has been a long time,” Mikel admitted.

“The guys have been killing me about it. It is good to get my first goal in the Premier League, I have scored in the FA Cup a couple of times.

PDP’s Moves To Humble Kwankwaso In Kano

22 September, 2013

“We have been vindicated in our claim that Alhaji Bamanga Tukur and his faction are not serious about their purported search for the return of peace in our party.
Just few hours after last Sunday’s meeting between the progressive Governors and the President, Tukur’s faction once more showed its disdain for peace by unilaterally setting up a Caretaker Committee to run the affairs of our Kano chapter. This was done without recourse to either the Leader of the party in Kano State, Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, or other stakeholders of the party from Kano.
“This illegality is a clear violation of our party’s constitution and was hurriedly done just to spite Governor Kwankwaso, the Party Leader in the State. We hereby urge our people in Kano State to ignore this illegality as we have set in motion the machinery to organise a proper election as stipulated by our party’s constitution.
“We are still at a loss why Tukur and his cohorts do not want peace to reign in PDP but no matter the odds we are very determined to ensure that peace is restored to our party with the prayers of Nigerians” These were the reactions of Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, the factional National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after last Monday’s inauguration of Kano State PDP Caretaker Committee at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja by Alhaji Tukur.
The Chairman and Secretary of the 11-man Caretaker Committee, whose other nine members will be announced later, are Hassan Kafayos and Andrew Musa respectively.
They were immediately sworn-in by the party’s National Legal Adviser, Victor Kwom while Abubakar Mustapha, the National Organising Secretary of the PDP said other members of the committee would be appointed later in Kano.
Tukur, while inaugurating the committee, explained that the interim exco would serve pending the conduct of a congress to elect officials to run the affairs of the party in the State. Justifying the dissolution of the former exco led by Alhaji Adamu Aliyu Sumaila, the National Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, said the tenure of the dissolved exco had expired on August 15 and that there was need for a caretaker committee.
The PDP National Chairman, who enjoined them to work with unity of purpose, said the party would consult widely with all the interest groups in the Kano before naming the other nine members of the committee.
He implored the interim exco to take cognizance of the strong opposition in Kano, pointing out that they should not be underrated. He also tasked the committee members to ensure that they address grievances among members in Kano and that the party must win the governorship election in the State in 2015. He said the caretaker committee was set up in accordance to the rules and provisions of PDP Constitution.
On whether the state Governor Kwankwaso was consulted on the setting up of the caretaker committee, the PDP National Publicity Secretary Chief Olisa Metuh said that the governor had been contacted.
“The governor is one of our best performing governors and so, we have no reason to exclude him from the party. But in the same way, we cannot exclude other persons, too,” Metuh said. However, pundits see the constitution of caretaker committee in Kano State as part of efforts to take over the control of party structure from Kwankwaso, who is considered as one of the stumbling blocks to the purported 2015 ambition of President Goodluck Jonathan.
Sunday Trust gathered that with this development, the party structure may be put under the control of the ousted Minster of National Planning, Dr Shamsudeen Usman and Ambassador Aminu Wali to weaken the influence of Governor Kwankwaso and his loyalists in Kwankwasiyya Movement.
This suspicion was further fueled by the return of Mohammed Abacha, son of former Head of State, General Sani Abacha, to the PDP after leaving the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) in 2010 where he failed in his attempt to contest for Kano governorship position in the last general elections.
Abacha was warmly received by the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) at the party’s national secretariat the day the caretaker committee was inaugurated for the Kano State chapter of the party in Abuja. While speaking on the development, Mohammed said that his return was informed by his realisation that the concept of internal democracy was practised better in the PDP than in any other parties.
He said that he had decided to forget about his political experience in the defunct CPC where he was denied the governorship ticket in 2011. On reports that he was being used to take over the party leadership in the State from Governor Kwankwaso, Mohammed said: “Nobody is wresting power from anybody because power belongs to God. We will do the little we can and God will decide the rest.”
The National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Chief Metuh, at a press conference earlier, explained that Mohammed’s return to the party was due to the reconciliatory work carried out in the last few months. But in another twist to the development, a former aide on special duties to Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, Ahmed Shua’ibu Gara, has dismissed the caretaker committee set up by the national secretariat of the PDP to run the affairs of the party in Kano as dead on arrival.
Speaking during a press briefing at Kano state NUJ secretariat, Gara stated that the party’s constitution does not recognize a caretaker arrangement.
He said the Kano chapter of PDP has shown so much responsibility and uncommon respect to the constitution of the party by formally notifying the national party leadership on 26th July 2013 through a letter with reference number KN/PDP/ADM/08/13 that the tenure of the state party executives is due to expire on 27th August, 2013.
He said the national body of the party responded in a letter dated 22nd August 2013 attaching a timetable for the conduct of a state congress and in it, the zonal offices of the party was directed to oversee the affairs of the party in the State.
“As I address you today, there is no communication or whatsoever from the party superseding those quoted above, only for us to watch on television that a purported caretaker committee is being sworn-in,” he lamented.
As the political intrigues between the new PDP led by Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje and the mainstream PDP led by Alhaji Tukur continue, only time will tell if the plots to humble Kwankwaso in Kano will succeed

Femi Fani-Kayode Criticizes the Jonathan Administration Following Yobe School Massacre
Femi Fani-Kayode Criticizes the Jonathan Administration Following Yobe School Massacre
In the early hours of this morning Boko Haram attacked the College of Agriculture in Gujba, Damaturu and shot to death 50 children.
It was a massacre and more bodies are still being counted as the death toll rises.
This has taken place in Yobe state where there is meant to be a state of emergency.
As I said in my speech to the DE Raufs Volunteers Group last monday, ”Nigeria has become an abbatoir of human flesh and blood” under this government.
May the souls of those innocent children rest in peace and may God deliver our nation from the hands of Boko Haram and this ineffectual and inept President who has no sensitivity, compassion or feeling and who is simply incapable of protecting the lives of our people and the territorial integrity of our nation.
Shame on him and all those that continue to support him.
May the blood of all those innocent children, and the thousands of other Nigerians that have been butchered in the last three years by BH, haunt them and be on their hands.

Deacon Shoots Dead His Pastor While Preaching In Church2
A pastor in Lake Charles, Louisiana was on Friday shot and killed as he preached in his church.
The man who shot him is allegedly Woodrow Karey, a 53-year-old deacon in the church. He is said to have called 911 and told the dispatcher what he had done.
According to witnesses, Karey went into the church – Tabernacle of Praise Worship Centre – at around 8:20 p.m. and shot Pastor Ronald Harris two times.
He shot him the first time as he entered the church and the second time at close range after he (Harris) fell on the floor.
The suspect then fled the scene on foot but called the sheriff’s office later to surrender.
The deacon has no known criminal record and his motive of killing his pastor is still unknown. His bond was set at $1million.

"Why I Wanted To Use Human Parts For Money Rituals" - Man Caught With Body Parts Confesses

23 September.2011

The quest for wealth has sent many into taking desperate steps as residents of Masfala area of Ibadan, Oyo State were shocked to their marrow on Tuesday, September 17, when a polythene bag containing human parts was discovered in an uncompleted building by policemen who stormed the area at noon.
photo
They were further amazed when the culprit turned out to be an herbalist, Abideen Raheem (35), who lives in a building very close to where the human parts were found. The parts were two hands cut from the wrists down.
The suspect is currently helping homicide detectives at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Iyaganku, in their investigations into the case.
Crime Reports gathered that information about the presence of the body parts in the neighbourhood first got to Operation Burst operatives. They were joined by detectives from Ogbere police station, and when confronted with the body parts, Raheem confessed that he was the one who put them in the polythene bag but claimed that he took them from a dead body he found at Ibadan Toll Gate area.
When detectives went to the spot he claimed to have seen the dead body, no carcass was found, an indication that the suspect was economical with the truth.
Raheem however opened up at the CID during interrogation, confessing that he removed the hands and head from a corpse in a grave at Muslim cemetery at Aba Onde area on Monday September 9 and hid them beside the cemetery. He revealed that he went back a week after, precisely on September 16 to take the hands while he still kept the head there.
Police sources told Crime Reports that the head had been recovered from where it was kept, but the identity of the corpse remains unknown.
